Halloween is a celebration on the eve of All Saints’ Day on the night of October 31 to November 1, which was originally celebrated mainly in Ireland and brought by emigrants to North America. For Halloween, children and adults dress up as ghosts and witches. The custom of carving faces in gourds for the Halloween festival goes back to the story of Jack O., a deceiver and drunkard who did only evil in his lifetime. Through a ruse, Jack O. lured the devil to a tree and then scuttled into the trunk a cross, causing the devil to be caught on the tree. When Jack died later, he found no place either in heaven or in hell. The devil gave him a piece of glowing coal in a turnip, with which he could wander through the darkness between heaven and hell. From this story it was deduced that one could frighten the spirits with such a turnip. Ever since the custom came to America, we used pumpkins.
