The tradition of string lights:

The tradition of using string lights on Christmas trees has a long history. This is closely linked to the Christian Christmas. In the 17th century in Germany, people began using real candles to light Christmas trees. The candles were meant to symbolize the light of Christ that had come into the world. The custom quickly spread to other countries, especially in Europe and North America.

In the past, people decorated the trees with candles, but this was a dangerous business. Open flames always posed a great fire hazard. To minimize this risk, they placed the candles in holders with small bowls that caught the dripping wax. They also only lit the candles on special occasions, such as Christmas Eve.

In 1882, Edward H. Johnson developed the first electric string of lights for his own Christmas tree in New York. He worked with Thomas Edison and used small light bulbs. These offered a safer and more practical alternative to traditional candles. In doing so, Johnson revolutionized Christmas tree lighting and initiated the transition from real candles to electric lights.

As more and more homes became able to access electricity, electric string lights became the lighting of choice in the USA in the 1920s. They created a safe and permanent solution and made it possible to light the trees for longer and safely. This custom continued to spread.

Today, people all over the world use fairy lights in different shapes and colors. These create a festive atmosphere during the Christmas season and continue to symbolize the light that brings hope and joy during the dark season.
