Herrnhuter stars

Thumbnail

The manufactory Herrnhuter stars produces the unmistakable stars of paper and plastic traditionally in manual work.
In the nineteenth century, mainly missionary children lived in the boardrooms of the brothers’ congregation in Herrnhut. The star as a symbol of biblical history was used by an educator as a template for mathematics teaching. The first stars wore the colors white / red – white, which stood for the purity and blood of Jesus Christ. On the first Sunday of Advent the children made the stars.

At the end of the 19th century, Pieter Hendrik Verbeek invented the first stable, composite star. This could be sent together, and was first expelled from the Herrnhut mission book. In 1925, Verbeek filed a patent for the further development of the building. This model with 17 square and 8 triangular pips corresponds to today’s design.
